Bainbridge Island’s curbside recycling and transfer station mixed recyclables are trucked to the Port of Tacoma to a materials recovery facility (or MRF, pronounced “murf”) called Waste Management JMK Fibers. There the commingled recyclables are sorted by type, then baled, then sold off to be processed into new items.
Find out how the materials you put into recycling are sorted into their respective bales of aluminum cans, mixed paper, #1 bottles, cardboard, glass and #2 jugs by watching this five-minute video of a MRF very similar to ours. (Note: They mention cartons, which is one item we do NOT recycle.)
