Welcome to the Bainbridge Island Watershed Council

The mission of the Bainbridge Island Watershed Council (BIWC) is to protect and restore our Island’s watersheds and shorelines, and by doing so, support the people and wildlife that depend on them. We accomplish these actions through volunteer stewardship, citizen science, outreach and education, and collaborating with City government and other Island stakeholders.

BIWC was formed by a concerned group of Bainbridge Island residents in the mid-1990s who were interested in doing more to learn about and protect our Island’s water quality and watersheds. We became a program of Sustainable Bainbridge in the mid-2000s which is a wonderful fit, as many of our efforts cross-pollinate with the goals of other programs in the organization, and we can accomplish many more things when we work together.

Activities

BIWC’s activities are driven by our watershed protection and restoration goals, and the passion and interest of our membership. Current activities include  interpretive sign development, work on pollinator habitats, and collaborative activities and events including Earth Month Bainbridge Island and the Bainbridge Island Beach Cleanup. Click on the boxes below to learn more about our activities.

Salmon Monitoring

Watershed Council conducted annual monitoring of spawning salmon on Bainbridge Island from 2005 through 2022. This program is now coordinated through the City.
