BACKGROUND
Over the last seven months, your hosts Mayor Ashley Mathews and council members Leslie Schneider and Kirsten Hytopoulos participated in the inaugural cohort of the Washington Collaborative Elected Leaders Institute (WA-CELI), a partnership of the Association of Washington Cities, William D. Ruckelshaus Center, and the Evans School of Public Policy & Governance.* The Institute seeks to promote the movement from hierarchical to collaborative leadership by introducing elected officials to collaborative tools aimed at embracing differing viewpoints and building consensus. The hosting council members are hopeful that this type of collaboration between city leaders and the community can become a regular part of city planning and decision-making.
